A Festify alternative that hosts from your phone
Festify showed how good a browser-based party queue could be: guests vote from their phones, no app needed. But it only plays through Spotify — Premium required — and playback only works in a desktop browser. Backseat keeps the no-app simplicity and removes those limits.
Where Festify gets stuck
- –Spotify only, and the host needs Spotify Premium.
- –Playback runs in the browser but not on mobile browsers — you need a laptop or desktop to host.
- –Voting decides the order, so the biggest friend group wins and quieter guests’ picks sink.
What Backseat does differently
Backseat hosts from any device with a browser — including the phone that’s already plugged into the speaker. Pick YouTube and there’s no Premium, no account, no cost at all.
And instead of turning the queue into a popularity contest, Backseat rotates turns: everyone gets one pick, in order, every round. The song your shy friend queued plays just as surely as the loud table’s.

How Backseat works
-
1
Start a room
Open Backseat on the phone or laptop that’s plugged into the speaker and pick YouTube (free) or Spotify. Takes a couple of taps — no sign-up.
-
2
Guests scan the QR code
Everyone joins from their own phone’s browser. No app to install, no account to create.
-
3
Everyone takes turns
Backseat rotates through the room in order. On your turn you search any song and it joins the shared queue — no votes, no aux-hogging.
Good to know
- Can I host a Backseat room from my phone?
- Yes. The host runs the room from any device with a browser — phone, tablet, or laptop — and the music plays from that device into the speaker.
- Is Backseat free?
- Yes. Backseat is free to use — no ads, no accounts, nothing to install. Hosting with YouTube costs nothing at all; hosting with Spotify needs Spotify Premium on the host device only.
- Do guests need an app or account?
- No. Guests join from any phone’s web browser by scanning a QR code or typing the room code. They never sign up for anything.
- How do turns work?
- Backseat goes around the room in order, like dealing cards. When it’s your turn you pick one song, then the turn passes to the next person. Nobody can flood the queue and nobody gets skipped.
